CLIENT ACCOUNTS AT NSDL CROSS 50,000!

With the increasing awareness in the depository system, there has been a steady rise in the growth of investor accounts. Within the last five months, more than 40,000 investor accounts have been opened with the Depository Participants of NSDL, bringing the total number of client accounts to 51,492. These accounts have been opened from 563 cities/ towns all over the country and 35 cities abroad.

The region wise breakup of client accounts within India is as follows

Client accounts have been opened from far-flung areas like Guwahati, Jorhat, Silchar and Tinsukia in Assam, Gangtok in Sikkim and Jammu and Srinagar in J&K.

The accounts opened by NRIs are from 35 cities from countries like USA,UAE, Switzerland, Canada, China, England, Singapore,etc. The category-wise break-up of the client accounts indicates an active response from retail investors

Kerala State, with 3694 accounts opened from 154 different cities and towns, records the largest number of locations from which client accounts have been opened. The state-wise break-up of the client accounts in India is as follows

In order to provide information about depository services to a large number of investors both in India and abroad and to keep them informed about the latest developments on the depository scenario, NSDL has set up a website. The address of the website is www.nsdl.co.in.

The Vysya Bank Ltd. has become operational as the first Depository Participant from Bangalore, bringing the total number of Depository Participants to 61.

As on August 3, 1998, 228 issuers have entered into agreements with NSDL to get their securities dematerialised. Amongst these, dematerialisation facilities are available for shares of 212 corporates. The Vysya Bank Ltd., East India Hotels Ltd. and Godrej Soaps Ltd. have signed agreements with NSDL to make their securities available for dematerialisation. Further, equity shares of Greaves Ltd., Rhone-Poulenc (India) Ltd. and Clariant (India) Ltd. have been made available for dematerialisation.

Parrys Confectionery Ltd. has made a one - time payment to NSDL that will enable NSDL not to charge custody fees to the DPs for its shares with effect from August 1, 1998. This brings the total number of companies who have opted for this scheme to 35.

As on July 31, 1998, more than 256 crore shares having a total value of about Rs. 40,900 crore have been dematerialised. Dematerialisation, as a percentage of the market capitalisation, crossed 25% for the following scrips
