NSDL DEMAT VOLUME CROSSES US$ 1bn. MARK

In November 1996, the depository commenced operations with three companies and three depository participants. In the past eight months, this figure has risen to 59 companies and 32 depository participants. The number of investor accounts has increased to more than 2700.

The value of dematerialised shares has reached Rs. 4026cr. (US$ 1,120 million). The Rs. 1000cr. mark was crossed in the third week of April 97. Indian Financial Institutions, mutual funds and foreign institutional investors constitute a major portion of the dematerialisation volume. Even more noteworthy is the fact that more than 10 lakh (1 million) shares have been dematerialised in individual accounts. So far, 22 crore shares have been dematerialised.
