Investor accounts at NSDL have shown a tremendous growth in the last six months. Total number of investor accounts has grown from one million in October 1999 to over 2.5 million in April 2000. An analysis of investor addresses shows that the growth has been more or less uniform across four regions in the country. Western region, which accounts for more than 50% of the accounts, tops the list followed by the southern, northern and the eastern region.
With this increase in the number of accounts, the spread of investor accounts as represented by the percentage of pincodes from where accounts have been opened has increased from 33% in October 1999 to 46% in April 2000 for the country as a whole.

In terms of total number of accounts, Maharashtra with 7.9 lakh accounts continues to lead followed by Gujarat with 5 lakh and West Bengal with 2 lakh accounts. The top three states together account for about 60% of the total accounts in the country. Kerala, with 57,000 accounts continues to have the maximum spread with more than 85% of total postal pincodes in the state being covered. West Bengal followed by Gujarat are second and third with a spread of 66% and 64%.
